Review: My Top 10 iPhone Photo Apps 2010

Here is my 2010 list of iPhone photography apps I’m using most often now. After using my iPhone for over a year to capture images for my “iPhoneography of the Day” project, I have made this list of the apps I find most useful to achieve the looks I want for my iPhoneography. Some of the apps are still the same from my list last year and some are new to the list. As I looked over the apps on my top 10 list from 2009 I came to realize how far iPhone photography has come in the last year. If you have an iPhone and you still have not used the camera for anything other than a few snap shots then you need to look at some of the apps I have in my list and go out and let the creativity flow.

Link to my 2009 List
_______________________________________

#1 – TiltShift Generator $.99 This app is my favorite app and I use it more than any other photo app on my iPhone. With this app you can give your images depth by making a flat image have a focus point. Also you can adjust the saturation, brightness, contrast, and add an adjustable vignette to your image. Its the best $.99 purchase you can make for your iPhone. Developers Site

#2 – Snapture $1.99 If you are still using the Camera app that comes with the iPhone thats OK but if you want to expand on the iPhone cameras capabilities then this is a great app. For starters this app will let you take shots in bursts of 3 so you can capture moving subjects easier. It lets you take a picture by touching the screen anywhere which is nice when taking pictures when your not looking at the screen. The only thing this app could use is a self timer function but I rarely find myself needing a timer but it would be nice if this app offered it. All in all this is a good alternative to your basic camera app. There are other apps that do the same as Snapture and some are free but I keep coming back to this app and I use it for almost all of my image captures. Developers Site

#3 – Hipstamatic $1.99 plus 4 $.99 in app upgrades Hipstamatic is a unique app that is unlike any of the other apps on my list. I personally do not like apps like this that are camera apps and give you only the options within the app to use on your images. So your asking why then do I like this app, well its because of exactly what I don’t like about this app is what I like. If you want an app that you can just pickup and have fun with like picking up a old plastic camera then this is the app for you. You can change the lens, film, and flash for different looks to your images. Developers Site

#4 – Photogene $2.99 This app is basically my goto app for adjusting color, crop, rotating, and straightening images. Its a very good app for doing this and a few other things. I have been playing with a different app that does the same and more but at this time I’m still saying this one is better because the other one cost twice as much and for the price Photogene is the better option. Developers Site

#5 – CinemaFX $.99 Still in my list because it has some filter sets that i have yet to find in any other app to this date. I love the Spartan Sepia, Japanese Memory, and TWI Flashback filters which I can achieve in other apps but why when you can just do it with in click in this app. I four see this app staying in my list for a long time just because it gives me looks that I like and its easy to use. Developers Site

#6 – Lo-Mob $1.99 Want that vintage look to your images like a Polaroid or 35mm film sprockets? Then this is the app for you and it does that and so much more. Its the only app I have found so far that gives a realistic emulsion transfer look. I also like the film sprockets that give you the look of shooting 35mm film in a Holga or Diana camera. Developers Site

#7 – ToonPaint $1.99 This app is why I love the iPhone and its capabilities. You can create cartoons from your images and if you use another app called Strip Designer you can create your own comic strips. With apps like these your creativity has no bounds with what you can do with your iPhone images. Developers Site

#8 – Tiffen Photo FX $2.99 I’m using this app less and less these days because there are so many other options with other apps that I like to use. This app is still very good at what it does and lets you have ton of filters to choose from but for me I like the effects I get in some of the other apps on my list better. Developers Site

#9 – Flickit Free The only app I use to upload my images to Flickr. It lets you add default metadata like descriptions, tags, and groups that is uploaded with every image you upload. That alone makes this app a time saver for me and makes it easier to upload my images to Flickr. Developers Site

#10 – PictureShow $1.99 The newest app to my arsenal and I have used it very little so far but from the few times I have it definitely has a place on this list. The options in this app are endless and this app is like CameraBag, CinemaFX, and Lo-Mob all in one. It doesn’t replace those apps but it has a little of all of them and is a good option for someone who just wants one easy to use app that can make their iPhoneography look a little more creative. Developers Site

_______________________________________

There are quite a few apps that could easily be on this list like CameraBag, CameraKit, and Mill Colour but I’m not using these apps very much anymore because of all the new options we have now. In closing, iPhoneography has come a long way so far and we are just in the beginning. What new apps will come out in the future and make it on my top 10 next year? I have a few right now that I’m playing with that could easily make it on the 2011 list.

Review: Tilt Shift Generator

Tilt Shift Generator I have used for a few days now and I’m very happy with it. Its an app that is going to find a permanent home on my iPhone. For me this app is just easy to use and has a lot of features for one app. The selective focus controls on this app are beautiful and very easy to use unlike some of the other apps that do this function this app has good response to your finger gestures. Within the first few seconds of playing with it I had a great looking image and what I saw on the screen was what I got on my final image. There are other apps that are very good at doing selective focus but with out calling any of them out I have found that using them can be difficult and the look you get sometimes look very fake in my opinion. Tilt Shift Generator I feel has a more realistic look to its selective focus which I like. I was very impressed with the controls for color because unlike a lot of apps that use sliders for adjustments this app actually works very well. One issue I have with this app is that you can not see the entire image when the editing sliders pop up because they pop up over the image and cover up the bottom part of the image, just a small annoyance.

The thing that just makes me love this app is the vignette tool and its got an adjustment slider which for me personally makes this app well worth the purchase. The last features this app has is you can export to your library, to email or twitter. Another great feature which is was a great surprise is that when you open a new image in the app it applies the last adjustments you did in the app which is really great if you want to recreate the same look on more than one image. The last issue I have with this app is with the output size which is 800×600. The developer states on the iTunes store that higher res is ongoing which I would guess we will see in a future update of the app.

Original Image shot with the iPhone 3GS. As you can see its very flat and lacking color.

The first option you have with the app is blur which is basically the tool for doing the selective focus. You have a lot of options on how you want to achieve this look so the best thing to do is play with it and experiment.

The second option you have is the color controls were you can adjust saturation, brightness, and contrast. I’m very impressed with the adjustments on this app, most apps that use sliders for adjustments can be very unforgiving on the adjustments but this app has good control and the sliders work very well.

The third option is the vignetting tool and for me this is the reason this app is going to be at the top of my photo apps. This is probably not a big deal to most but almost all of my images have some sort of vignette applied to them because thats the look I like and I have had problems with finding apps that have a this simple tool.

The final image using only Tilt Shift Generator and no other apps. This app takes the place of what would take me two or three apps to achieve before.

Review: My Top 10 iPhone Photo Apps

Here is a list of my top 10 Photo Apps I use on my iPhone. This list is not all of the Apps I use but they are the ones I use the most. There are a lot of apps out there that are really good and some I have not had the time to play with yet and when I do they may find their way on to this list but for the time being these apps get me the results I’m looking for with my images. Also some of these apps do not work with the camera in OS3 yet but I use the main Camera app to take my photos and use all of these apps to process images from my photo library. So far all of these apps do work in this way for me in OS3 on the iPhone 3GS.

#1 – Photogene is the one app I could not live without. It does just about everything I need to process my images. Its the app I use when I just want to adjust the color of an image or add some saturation. Also it is the app I use on those small occasions when I need to crop.

#2 – CameraBag is my goto App for when I just need something to look good quick. My favorite filters are Helga and Lolo and a lot of times I use them together.

#3 – CameraKit is my other goto app for getting a quick look that when I’m in a hurry. I love the cross process looks while doing a +1 or +2 Push with the built in vignette and I’m done.

#4 – Tiffen Photo Fx is the app if I just want to look at a lot of different effects for my images when I don’t know exactly what I want. I use to use this app all the time but now not as much and the reason is lately I know what process I want for my image and some of the other apps are just simpler to use quick and your done. This app is great if you have time to sit down and spend sometime on your image effects.

#5 – Tiffen Cool Fx is the same as Photo Fx whit a few different effects added. As with Photo Fx I use to use this app a lot but now I find my self using the much simpler apps. The one thing I love about this app and I wish every photo app included this is that you can add a vignette to your image with a tough of the button and that is probably the one feature that made me use this app so much.

#6 – Cinema Fx well this app is one that I didn’t use at first and was unsure of but over time I started to play with it and enjoy using it. It has a very simple interface and is very quick and easy to use. I find myself using only a few of the presets and those would be Spartan Sepia, TWI.Flashback, and Japanese Memories. So this is the app I use when I want those looks.

#7 – Mill Colour is another app that I didn’t know what to think of until one day when I just sat down and started playing with it. The interface takes a little getting used to but once you do its a very good app. The filters I use the most on this app is the Cross-Processed and Promo. Did I mention this app is the one of the only free apps on my list which makes this one worth a try and for the weekend iPhoneographer this app may be all you need.

#8 – TiltShift is the app to use when you want selective focus on your image. If you want to add a little soft focus to the edges of your images or you want to an area of your image to be in focus while everything else is out of focus then this app is the one for you.

#9 – iLeica is not a very polished app but for what I use it for it doesn’t have to be. Its simply the app I use for all of my images when I need to add a vignette. I use this app a lot because most of the apps do not have the ability to add a vignette. As of writing this the developers of this app have not updated it for OS3 so the camera function in this app does not work. This is not a problem to me because I only use this app on images from my photo library and fortunately that still works in OS3.

#10 – ColorSplash is an app that I have not used for any of my images that I have posted yet. I have seen results from others iPhoneographers that have used this app and some of the results are amazing. I have not had the time to sit down with this app and experiment yet but I know when I do get the time this is one of the apps that would be in my top 10 so I listed it.

#11 – Flickit is not in my top 10 but has to be mentioned because its the one app I use everyday no mater what app I have used to process my images. Flickit is really not an image app, its an app that uploads my images to Flickr. Also because of a recent conversation with a fellow iPhoneographer Valerie Ardini about how do I keep my exif data intact when uploading to Flickr we found out that this app keeps the exif data when many other apps do not. Also it has the best price around, Free.

So there is my list. Let me know what are your favorite apps because I know there are a lot of great apps out there that I haven’t even heard of. The one thing I want to say in closing is you don’t need to go out and buy all of these apps to take great photos on your iPhone all you need is what is already installed on every iPhone sold and that is the Camera app. The best camera for the job is the camera you have with you at the time. Check your pocket you have a camera in there.

Review: iLeica Camera

iLeica takes old styled photos that will make any photo come to life. In photography and optics, vignette (vin-ye-ting) is a reduction of an image’s brightness or saturation at the periphery compared to the image center. A similar effect occurs when filming projected images or movies off a projection screen, the so-called hotspot, defining a cheap home-movie look where no proper telecine is used. Version 1.0 comes with 20 filters from dark rounded blacks to lighter whites or blues. Load from your camera roll to add filters to existing photos.

I have used this app a few times and its not the most polished photo app but it gets the job done. I have not used it as a camera but its basically the same as the iPhone camera app. What I do use this app for is applying a vignette to images in my photo album. The app has a lot of variations to its vignettes which makes it very easy to find one that will work for any image. One thing it can not do is add the vignette to a cropped image so if you are using this app make sure you are using it on an image that has not been cropped.

Review: PhotoFlipper

PhotoFlipper is simple and free image rotation/flipping application. I rarely need to use an app to rotate my images and when I do I use a paid app called Photogene $2.99 but a friend asked me if there was an app that can do this for free easily. So after searching I came up with PhotoFlipper which is free and it does a very good job of rotating and flipping your images. You can easily rotate your images then you can flip them horizontal or vertically. The app has a very clean and easy interface and was very intuitive to use. A funny thing overlooked on this app is there is a typo and horizontal is misspelled horisontal but it still works the same way.

Review: Lomo Camera (Updated)

This app does a good job of recreating the lomo style but one major feature left out is that you can not apply these filters to any photos in your photo library. You can only apply these looks to the images that you take with the app and not to any images you may have in your photo library. I hope in the future the developer will add this ability but until they do this app will be lost on my iPhone and never used. If you don’t mind using this app as your camera app and you want that lomo effect than the app is good. Here are some examples of the different looks you get with this app.

Version 1.0 My Rating 2 of 5 Stars
Version 1.1 My Rating 3 of 5 Stars

Update July 6, 2009:

Version 1.1 is out and the developers have added new features. One of which is being able to import images from your photo library. That was on of the things I thought was a major feature that needed to be added. Now that I can process images from my library this app will be one that finds a home on my iPhone. Also I’m changing my rating from 2 to 3 out of 5 stars. Its improved but the price is a little high for what you get compared to some of the other apps. Both CameraBag and CameraKit sell for $1.99, that should be there price point.

Review: QuadCamera – Multi shot

QuadCamera is a very unique app and may not be for everyone but for the iPhoneographer that wants to be a little creative this app is for you. This app essentially takes multiple shots based on your time setting then puts them together in a layout of your choosing. Available layouts are 2X2, 4X1, 4X2, 8X1 and you can also pick a from 6 different color styles from vivid to grayscale. One major drawback to this app is that it saves at 600X800.

Review: Photogene

Photogene is an app that does just about everything you want in a iPhoneography app. For one program it has a lot of features that every iPhoneographer will need. I use this app for adjusting the levels, saturation, and color then if I need to I can crop the image as well. If there is one app you should have and need to have on your iPhone it is this one. Review: CinemaFX

CinemaFX is a very simple app with preset filters to choose from. It gives you the ability to adjust the filters once applied to fine tune your image effect. It has a wide variety of filter presets and gives the user a lot of choices. The price is excellent at $.99 and can’t be beat. This is an app that I use especially for the spartan sepia and japanese memory presets. For the price this app offers a lot and if you want an easy to use, non complicated, expandable app this one is worth a try.

Key Features:

  • Full thumbnail preview of all effects, easy to pick the one you like.
  • Primary slider to control how much the effect is applying to the photo and secondary slider for additional adjustment.
  • Combine different effects within one session.
  • Extra tools: resize, 90 degree rotation, etc.
  • Brightness & contrast filter that won’t blow out the highlight details – an essential tool to fix dark and flat photos.
  • Full screen and full resolution.
  • Quick and full integrated help.

Effects:

  • TWI.Poster This highly stylized effect turns your photo into a Twilight movie poster by coloring your photo with reddish brown and bluish gray, with additional touch of Gothic glow.
  • TWI.Flashback A grainy old photo style, featured after flashback scenes from the movie.
  • Heat Vision See like a Predator – the extra-terrestrial warrior in the movie series. Use the secondary slider to adjust the glow of radiant heat.
  • Color Comic Inspired by A Scanner Darkly, this effect makes any ordinary shot into a posterized art painting. Use the sliders to adjust posterization and stroke intensity to find the most appealing combination.
  • Spartan Sepia A dark sepia tone and red garments characterized the movie 300. Add this dramatic effect to your photo and give it a 300 look! Works best with red clothing against blue sky, this isn’t just another sepia filter: saturated red is enhanced and darkened sky appears gloomy and ominous.
  • Vampire World A bluish dark tone, featured in the movie Underworld. Also frequently used by other movies to create night, moon-lighted, inside-spacecraft, etc. scenes.
  • Elf Glow A glowing highlighted world for fairies and elves, this filter brings a fantasy movie effect instantly.
  • Charmed Glow Turns your portrait instantly into a celebrity shot by adding a creamy glow and lush color enhancement, no surgery or makeup needed.
  • Surveillance Cam Big Brother is watching – use this interlace filter to put your subjects “under surveillance”.
  • …More effects description and side-by-side samples on their website
