OmniVision the supplier of the 3.2 megapixel camera found in the iPhone 3GS has announced today they are supplying Apple with cameras for their new iPod Touch, Nano, & Classic lines.
“OmniVision has secured CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for upcoming Apple iPods, according to market sources. OmniVision will be the sole supplier of 3.2-megapixel CIS products for new iPod nano, iPod classic and iPod Touch models which will be launched in September, the sources indicated. The company is one of the 3.2-megapixel CIS suppliers for the iPhone 3GS and is expected to ship 18 million CIS products to Apple per quarter. I have read the rumors regarding the inclusion of a camera in the refresh of the iPod Touch which makes sense to be true but this was the first time I have read out about the possibilities of these cameras being in the iPod Nano and the iPod Classic. If these rumors are correct and at this point they do have some merit as to being true than on September 9th when Apple holds its media event it could change the photography world in a big way. This little artist community of iPhoneographers is going to grow to be a huge movement. I see Apple as being on the verge of something Kodak did with the Brownie Camera. Kodak made photography accesable to the average consumer with their Brownie Camera and revolutionized the photography industry. Now I feel Apple could do the same by including a camera in all the iPods they sell excluding the iPod Shuffle, thats over 50 million iPods every year.
I understand that the advent of digital photography revolutionized photography and now everyone has or can afford a digital camera but with those digital cameras comes the draw backs that you have to have a computer. With the iPhone all of the pictures I have taken have never seen the computer so basically I don’t need a computer to take and share my pictures with the world. Now all of those people caring around an iPod Touch will be able to do the same thing. Will have to wait and see the features on the iPod Nano and Classic to see if those will have the capability of using apps but if all they have is a camera to take pictures thats still big thing.
On September 9th we will all see what Apple has decided to add to the new line of iPods and I think it will be a great thing for the photography world. Stay Tuned….
