Short Film shot and edited on the new iPhone 4

A short film “Apple of My Eye” was shot and edited entirely on the iPhone 4 / iMovie App (in 48 hours). The footage was expanded to show behind the scene looks at making this short film.

I can’t wait till I get a iPhone 4 so I can experiment with its movie making capabilities.

Apple licensed iPhone/Touch Solar Charger Case

Novothink, a global manufacturer of energy alternative electronic devices, announced the release of Solar Surge, the first Apple licensed solar charger case for iPod Touch. The smartly-designed, hybrid solar charger case enables anyone to power up from the sun while carrying their iPod. The company will also be releasing the Solar Surge for iPhone 3G and 3GS in the fourth quarter. Available in a variety of colors, Solar Surge for iPod Touch is priced at $69.95 and will be available at major retailers at the end of September.

This could be great for those of us that forget to charge their iPhone the night before a big shoot to later find the pop up on their iPhone telling them they have 10% battery left. I’m not say this has ever happened to me but if it ever does I would be prepared with this case.

Is Apple going to be the new Kodak?

OmniVision the supplier of the 3.2 megapixel camera found in the iPhone 3GS has announced today they are supplying Apple with cameras for their new iPod Touch, Nano, & Classic lines.

“OmniVision has secured CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for upcoming Apple iPods, according to market sources. OmniVision will be the sole supplier of 3.2-megapixel CIS products for new iPod nano, iPod classic and iPod Touch models which will be launched in September, the sources indicated. The company is one of the 3.2-megapixel CIS suppliers for the iPhone 3GS and is expected to ship 18 million CIS products to Apple per quarter. Omnivision will also continue add orders to Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company (TSMC) and Vanguard International Semiconductor (VIS), the sources claimed.” (via: DigiTimes)

I have read the rumors regarding the inclusion of a camera in the refresh of the iPod Touch which makes sense to be true but this was the first time I have read out about the possibilities of these cameras being in the iPod Nano and the iPod Classic. If these rumors are correct and at this point they do have some merit as to being true than on September 9th when Apple holds its media event it could change the photography world in a big way. This little artist community of iPhoneographers is going to grow to be a huge movement. I see Apple as being on the verge of something Kodak did with the Brownie Camera. Kodak made photography accesable to the average consumer with their Brownie Camera and revolutionized the photography industry. Now I feel Apple could do the same by including a camera in all the iPods they sell excluding the iPod Shuffle, thats over 50 million iPods every year.

I understand that the advent of digital photography revolutionized photography and now everyone has or can afford a digital camera but with those digital cameras comes the draw backs that you have to have a computer. With the iPhone all of the pictures I have taken have never seen the computer so basically I don’t need a computer to take and share my pictures with the world. Now all of those people caring around an iPod Touch will be able to do the same thing. Will have to wait and see the features on the iPod Nano and Classic to see if those will have the capability of using apps but if all they have is a camera to take pictures thats still big thing.

On September 9th we will all see what Apple has decided to add to the new line of iPods and I think it will be a great thing for the photography world. Stay Tuned….

iPhoneography: Worth A Click

Here’s a few links worth checking out while your surfing this weekend.

  • Jorge Colombo an amazing artist using the iPhone for some of his sketches. He is also the iPhone artist who’s art work was the cover for the June 2009 New Yorker Magazine.

  • Just iPhone Art a blog featuring different iPhone artists. I find it amazing what some of these artists are able to do with the iPhone apps.

  • Shutter Station: How to do a time-lapse video with your iPhone? There’s an app for that and its called TimeLapse. It seems there really is an app for everything.

  • Joby gorillamobile the perfect accessory for the serious iPhoneographer that needs a little stability in their iPhoneography.

Underwater iPhoneography

Today I went to my cousins house to swim and try out my new Canon G10 with its underwater housing which can be seen in the previous post of my iPhoneography of the Day shot. While shooting with the Canon I started to think if it was possible to shoot with the iPhone underwater so when I got home I did some searching and found a couple of possibilities but one stood out to me and it was the Aquapac Waterproof iPhone case . I ordered one and I will do a complete review as soon as I get it so stay tuned.

iPhone is the most popular camera on Flickr

iPhone is now the most popular camera on the Flickr community. This is pretty amazing sense the iPhone is a phone first, camera second but it goes to show you that the best camera for the job is the camera you have with you and everyone who has an iPhone has a camera with them all of the time. I have mine with me all the time and even with me being a professional photographer with all the best cameras and lenses I still like shooting with my iPhone. I have never said this about a camera before but the iPhone is fun to shoot with. Now that the iPhoneographers are taking Flickr by storm what will be next? Will the iPhone will be the most popular camera on YouTube? YouTube has already reported a dramatic increase on mobile uploads since iPhone 3GS came out.

iPhone 3Gs Available Today

iPhone 3Gs hit stores today. Picture above depicts the video editing feature added to this new iPhone. From everything that I have been reading about the camera in this new iPhone we as iPhoneographers should be happy with the new camera and features. I personally still have a iPhone 1st Generation and because of that I have trouble shooting things close up because the lens is fixed focus and it does not focus close up. If I had a 3G phone I could get the Griffin Clarifi case and have the ability to shoot close but they never made a case like that for the first iPhone. Now with the new iPhone which has macro focus I will be able to get those shots that have eluded me.

Now with all of this news of a better camera my question is will it be to good? Yes, you heard me right will it be to good or will it have the same toy camera feel as the iPhone I have? I love the look and feel of the iPhone images I take, some are out of focus, some are blurry, and some are grainy which reminds me of the film days with the toy cameras like the Diana, Holga, and Lomo all of which are still being used today. So I guess if the camera is to good we will just start seeing apps that make the picture look out of focus, blurry, and grainy. Thats what we as photographers do we buy the best cameras, the sharpest lens just so we can slap a piece of plastic in front of the lens to make it less sharp or we just manipulate the image in Photoshop.

As soon as I get one of these new iPhones I will now for myself how good the images look. Maybe the old iPhones will be the toy cameras of the future, sold next to those Dianas, Holgas, and Lomos? What ever happens I’m still going to upgrade to the new iPhone just for the fact that I will be able to shoot close ups and have more control on my focus. Hopefully soon I will be adding posts about how great this new iPhone is, that is when Im able to get one.
